| How do I log on as the Administrator?
| TIA
|
|

Thanks for your quick response. A box came up with my User name already
there. The next line it asked for the password. I used the same password
that I have on system startup. It was rejected: "The system could not log
on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password
again"

I know my user name was correct, but I'm not sure what this domain thing is
all about, and there wasn't anything there in that box about it. Typed my
password again and it failed again. On the next try didn't key in password
and hit OK and it came back to the way I normally use it.Would appreciate
some more help.
Thanks

Ben,

Where is has user name enter Administrator
The put in the password for the Administrator account - this was set by you
if you did you own install, it may also be blank if this machine came
preinstalled (or a password that your PC vendor set and should have supplied
to you in the documentation that came with your PC)
If you have another box which mentions Domains then use the drop down and
choose the one that is your PC's name, it also have (this machine) next to
it.

Thanks for your help Mike.
My new computer (Two weeks old now) came preinstalled with Win XP Home. I
had the vendor install the password upon startup as I do not want the others
to misuse the computer in my absence. Which means the other three users (my
family) cannot use the computer in my absence.

Did as you told and entered Administrator as user name and then the password
but it got rejected again. There is no Domains box. Would appreciate more
help.
Thanks

Did that and in Safe Mode the Administrator account appeared without me
doing anything about it. Clicked on it and was presented with a blank page.
Nothing much can be done in Safe Mode.

My original intention was to remove Norton Antivirus which I could not as it
had no uninstall. It was part of Norton Systemworks. Upon uninstalling
Systemworks, everything else went, but Antivirus somehow remained. Norton
newsgroup advised me to try from Administrator account, and obviously I have
to do it from Normal Mode.

You have XP Home. By default the hidden Administrator account has a blank
password on XP Home. So boot to Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key
when the computer is booting until you get to the advanced menu. Select safe
Mode and press Enter. You should be greeted with a log on screen that has
Administrator account listed. Select it but do not enter a password. You
should log on to the Admin account. You can then go to Control Panel->User
Accounts and select you regular account and change the password. You can use
your old password again if you liked it.

With XP Pro you do not have to boot to Safe Mode to access the hidden
Administrator account. With XP Pro you can simply press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice
as mentioned by others. However with XP Home you must boot into Safe Mode to
access that account and there is no password to enter. This is by default.

I could only get until here. Selected Administrator (clicked on it). There
was no password to enter. The screen changed to a blank, still in Safe mode.
Waited but nothing else came up. Restarted and went back to Normal Mode. Is
something wrong with my computer?
TIA
