Administrator Priviledges

Good Morning,

I'm using XP Pro SP2. I am the Admin and only User. I trialed Windows Live
One Care and have now uninstalled it because the subscription is unavailable
in Canada. I am now trying to re-install Zone Alarm, Norton, AVG, F Secure
etc - but in every case I get a message that the program cannot install
because I do not have Admin priviledges.

Can anyone please advise how to fix this?

Hmm. Verify that you are indeed logged on as an administrator. The command
net localgroup administrators will show what users are members. It is
possible that malware has modified permissions on your computer in an
attempt to try to restrict administrators. If you believe that is the case
see the link below on how you can use the secedit command to reset security
settings to default defined levels in XP Pro an of course scan for malware
and spyware.

Hi Steven - I took a chance and ran the CMD - and lo and behold I am the
admin and the only member of the group with unrestricted access.

Now what????

If you can logon as that account then try running the secedit command as
shown in the link below to see if it will reset security settings to allow
you to install your programs. You can copy and paste the command into a
command window to run. You may need to reboot your computer after running
the secedit command as described.

Thanks for your help Steven - but I believe I have found the culprit.

I run Diamond's Process Guard and it was blocking access to the Registry
(which is what it is supposed to do) even after I exited the program. This
morning I left it running but stopped all services and then AVG installed
properly.
