I have a computer with Win2k Pro on it. When I log in as
local administrator (administrator and the proper
password) it's as if the computer has lost it's mind. If
I go to device manager, the computer says "you must log
out and log in as administrator to make any changes."
Also it will not allow me to add TCP/IP Protocol. It
gives me an "access denied" error. It's as if the
administrator account has been downgraded to power user.
I was wondering if there's anyway, short of a
format/reload, to reset the policy on the administrator
group.

I see two error messages when I do this. Both are
identical:
LookupAccountSid failed with 1789.

Any ideas?
Bob

Hi Bob.

First verify that you are logging on with an account that is in the local
administrators group. Run "net user username" at the command prompt to check group
membership. If it is and you can not recall doing any changes then your computer may
have been compromised by a hacker/worm and I suggest you run virus scan on it with
the latest definitions to check for a virus worm. If it looks clean then see the KB
link below on how to use secedit [assuming you can run it] to reset security settings
to default defined levels. --- Steve
