Administrator Permission Problem

I am trying to re-install my ATI (AGP 9800 PRO) video drivers and the
Catalyst control center associated with it. The drivers appear to install
but the Catalyst Control Center actually does not.

I get an error message that says "You do not have permission to change
Catalyst Control Center settings. Please contact your administrator for
further help.". I am using Windows XP PRO and I have tried installing as
the Administrator and with my user account that is tagged as "Computer
Administrator" as well with the same results. The ATI second level support
contact says it is a Windows Computer Management issue.

I'm also wondering if the fact that there are several updates that this
computer indicates install when I install them but never show up as install
and are reported for install each time the I attempt to do updates. I've
also tried installing each manually using the links provided. (See below)

ATI catalyst is pretty lame,& xp doesnt care for it either.Try installing the
drivers,DOA,& control-panel from the 9800 cd.Then update drivers only from
ATI,you can get the last control-panel update by typing in advanced search:
737-20767 or its 737-22569.Then update drivers only as they come out...

Thanks for your note Andrew E.

Your suggestion parallels the instructions from ATI support so, problems
with their software is a known issue.

This time it turned out to be a Windows XP Update problem instead.

I finally had all Saturday to resolve the issue so I contacted Microsoft
Support. I explained that the system was reporting that Administrator
Permissions were denying any updates. As it turned out, the .NET Framework
2.0 install was thrashed and, working with a MS tech, I spent almost 3 hours
removing (it took a special app. to remove it) and re-installing it plus the
related Windows updates for it. Once that was resolved, the ATI drivers and
Catalyst Control Center went in without a peep from the OS.

No wonder the first level support told me to do a clean install. I
persisted because it would take a week to get all the programs I have running
re-installed and configured. In addition, who knows what I would have lost.
The technician patiently worked with me and now.. I'm a relatively happy guy.

Once again, thanks for taking time to respond. I do appreciate your efforts.
