If I don't recall being prompted to set this relationship
up, does that make me an administrator by default? If not,
since I am the owner and only user of the system, how do i
make sure that I have this power?

Emily,

To check the user account type, click start | run | control userpasswords.
You can see if teh account is "administrator" or "limited"

Another option, click start/run/cmd
type "net users <username>"
check "local group membership"

Thanks, Ramesh. I am the Administrator, by default.
