I installed printer software which made me restart comp. However, on the
restart I now go to a screen where I can choose the user. The Problem is I
have never set up any users so ther are none to choose and therefore no way
to get to my desktop. It does however eventually go to a page which asks for
the admin name and password of which I don't have becaue my bro in law
installed and doesn't remember..................Please Help!!!

Is this Windows Pro or Windows Home version?
If it is Windows Home then boot to Safe Mode by restarting the computer.
keep tapping the F8 key until you see the boot menu. Choose the option to
start windows using Safe Mode. You should see the Administrator account. By
default it has no password so just press the Enter Key. From there go to
Control Panel->User Accounts and reset your original logon account.

If your version is XP Pro then you will likely need a tool to hack the
password. You can find one here
www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/Tools/NTPASSWORD/ntpasswordhack.zip

Can you tell me what OS is intalled and what is brand of computer.

When you restart your computer Hit F8 and select Safe Mode and select
Administrator and just hit ok to login (no password required) once you
are change the password and restart your computer with normal mode and
use new password.

Hope this helps.

It is XP Professional. I tried going to safemode and the same thing
happened. It asks me to choose a logon/user account except there aren't any
there.

The printer software probably installed .Net 1.1. You can fix the login
situation by going to Windows Update and applying the .Net 1.1 patch.

Although you did not set up a user account, you are in fact using one every
time you log on. The easiest way to deal with this is to log onto the
built-in Administrator account which is normally hidden.

In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping
the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right
menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once
in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The
default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen, do
Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up Windows.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or have
Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the built-in
Administrator account's password to a blank.

Then go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords that
you will remember and make other desired changes. Make a note of what your
user account is called - it is probably something like "Owner". Then go to
Windows Update and get the .Net 1.1 update.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). It will be very quick and
easy for a professional to get into your computer and fix the logon issue.
