Administrator in Vista

My son got a laptop for xmas with Vista on it. He messed with it a bit at
his dad's, had a few pictures on it, etc. When he brought it home he was set
up as the administrator and only user.

I changed the administrator name from his to mine and set him up as a user
without administrative rites. But he was upset that he couldn't find any of
his pictures, his background had changed, etc. So...I changed the
administrator account name back to his and made it a standard user. I
deleted the user account I had set up for him and tried to set an
administrator account up for myself...but now it won't let me set up an
administrator account. No matter what name I try to assign to the user
profile it says that the name includes prohibited characters (yaknow, /?)
etc). I set myself with a non-admin account and it won't let me change it to
admin. So basically right now I have two users, no administrators, and no
ability to use parental controls and heck only knows what else.

I tried to use a system recovery...it gave me an error.

What the HECK?? Any ideas?

Hi Terrie,

Yep, you wiped out all the Administrator accounts leaving yourself with
no easy way to change anything.

You can boot into "Safe Mode" and see if you can create a new
Administrator account in there. This tutorial will show you how to boot
into the "Advanced Boot Options" where you can select "Safe Mode".

If for some reason you cannot create a new Administrator account in
Safe Mode, then enable the "Built-in Administrator account" temporarily
while you are in Safe Mode. You can then log off of Safe Mode and logon
to the built-in Administrator account to create a new regular
Administrator account again. This will show you how.
