I bought a laptop from a friend used. I setup a user account also making it
an administrator. It was my intention to delete the other administrator
because I had no way of getting the info. needed to use it. So I deleted the
old administrator since I had setup one to replace it. Well I dont know what
happened because the user I created was set as a limited account. So know I
dont have a administrator and I'm unable to do the things needed. What can I
do to fix this problem?

Note: There is a hidden 'Administrator' account (the account name is:
Administrator) in Windows.
The default password for this hidden account is normally blank (none).

For XP Home users:
Boot the computer into Safe Mode
Do this by pressing the F8 key (several times) after the Power On Self Test
is finished, until the Start menu appears.
This will get you to the correct menu window.
Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account
and any other accounts.
(Note: Accounts are displayed alphabetically).
Use the mouse or Up/down arrow keys to highlight the 'Administrator'
account.
The default password is a blank (no password required).

For XP Pro users:
You do not need to go into Safe Mode.
At the Welcome Screen, do/press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys twice to display the
Windows logon box.
Type in "Administrator" (without the quotes), by default the password is
blank, no password need be entered.

Is it Windows XP Home Edition?
If so, boot into the Safe Mode and the "real" administrator should become available.
If it is Windows XP Pro edition press Ctrl+Alt+Del until you get the Administrator account.

This assumes you deleted your friends Account with Administrative rights.

XP Home or Pro? It does matter.

Boot into Safe Mode, and log into the account named "Administrator". The
password is likely blank (just press enter). From there, you can promote
your Limited account. If this is XP Pro, in regular mode at the Welcome
screen press control+Alt+Delete twice to get the login box, enter
Administrator as the user name whatever password (try Enter). If there's a
password and you don't know it, you can reset it with various utlities.

If you *disabled* the Admin account, apparently there is a way via Safe Mode
Command Prompt Only to re-enable it with the Policy editor, but that's only
available with XP Pro; again there is aparently a way to install that on
Home, but you couldn't get there with the permissions you have now.

You really shouldn't be able to delete the Administrator account, but if you
have done so, and if there is no other Admin account, you fix it by backing
up your data (take the drive out, attach it to another system and copy files
off) and starting over with a reinstall of Windows.
