In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to
the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not
work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden
Administrator account. The default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen,
do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up
Windows.

It is not possible to delete the built-in Administrator account. You
still haven't said which version of XP you have, but I'm going to
assume it is Home Edition. Go into Safe Mode per previous instructions.
When you get to the Welcome Screen, do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice and you will
get the classic Windows logon box. Now type in "Administrator" (without
the quotes) and leave the password blank. Now you should be logged into
the Administrator account where you can manage all user accounts from
the User Accounts applet in Control Panel.

In your next post back, please tell us what the virus/malware status of
the computer was. Did you have a full-featured antivirus installed? Was
it a current version (not earlier than 2004) with an active
subscription and updated virus definitions? Also tell us what version
of XP you have - Home or Pro.

Ok i did that and there were two accounts in there one said just
administrator and the other one had my name by the word administrator but
neither of them would let me get into them. I have no spy/malware found and
i am using Xp home with Nortons 2005 fully updated with an active subscription

You want to log into the account called Administrator. What does
"neither of them would let me get into them" really mean? What happens
when you try? Remember that I cannot see your computer from here and
please be more descriptive if you want help from this newsgroup.

If you find it difficult to explain exactly what is happening, what
changed between the time things worked, etc. - and that's OK, not
everyone is good with writing and it is hard to write about technical
things if you don't know the terms - then take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). Someone who can actually see the computer and work with
it hands-on has a much better chance of fixing it quickly than people
who are only reading a sketchy account of the problems.

they just keep saying that i do not have permission to enter them. i cannot
even do a system resore or put a new program on the computerso will it be
possible for me to fdisk if i need to and if i can will i haveto do anything
different to how i usually do it because of this problem

So I'm assuming this means that you don't have the password for the
Administrator account? The default is usually a blank but if you or
someone else changed it, you can change it to a blank with a program
called NTpasswd. I don't know if this will be more than you can do (and
again, I'm not saying this to insult you - it does take some computer
skill to create the boot disk and use NTpasswd), but here is the link:

Otherwise, I think you should take the machine to a computer
professional and just go do something else while they deal with it.

i have NOT put any passwords on this computer and as I am the only one using
it can vouch for the fact that this has not been changed, and as I built my
machine myseld would prefer NOT to have some flybynight at pcworld meddle
with it thank you. I will post whatever it takes to solve this problem for
you Mrich.

Okay, okay - don't be so touchy. It's just that based on your previous
posts you don't sound very computer savvy. Maybe you are and you just
aren't great at communicating the situation. I'm trying to help you,
remember? And you're not making it very easy.

So, if you didn't put an Administrator password on - and again, do you
have Home or Pro? - then the default password is a blank. And again,
what happens when you boot into Safe Mode, use Ctrl-Alt-Del twice at
the Welcome Screen to get a classic logon box, type in Administrator
and press the Enter key?

Sorry you are right I do have difficulty explaining things technically , I
am using XP home and I have answered all the questions you asked me in an
earlier post too. righht now to busines....... When I get into safe mode and
use ctrl-alt-del twice i get up the task manager with the users tab openned
there is absolutley nothing writen in this box. i will be fdisking on Boxing
day if I dont get this sorted out but i have to do the end of year books
before I can take time to do this.So far windows lets me do the books and
save them and print them so its not an imediate threat but just an annoying
niggle.
Thanks boopygirl.

I'm sorry, but I'm completely at sea with what you are really doing.
This thread got very long and was never very precise. If you are
getting into Safe Mode then you are obviously logging into some
account. Your previous posts gave the impression that somehow your
regular user account had disappeared and the only account you could see
was Guest. It was never very clear.

The whole exercise of getting you to boot into Safe Mode was to get to
the Administrator account so you could manage user accounts, create a
new one, whatever. Now it appears that you *are* getting into Windows?
So what's the bloody issue?

If all this is about is that you can't see the damn Administrator on
your Welcome Screen in Regular Mode, then this is absolutely normal for
XP Home. The built-in Administrator account is normally hidden in XP
Home, which you've finally told me is the version you have.

Honestly, get a knowledgeable friend over so you can *show* them what
the trouble is. I really do wish you the best of luck.

thanks for all your help anyway. The only account that should be on this
dammed computer should be me as the administrator and no guest. i will be f
disking on monday so that should cure it once and for all, its about due for
a clear out anyway. have a wonderful time over the holiday (or christmas)
depending on what you celebrate ( or not) as the case may be. I will post
after ther new year just to let you know the problem is sorted.
