At some point in the past couple of months (don't know what happened)
something broke our Windows 2000 Pro installation's security and/or
registry. Everything works normally, but when I plug in a new USB
device (a scanner or webcam, for example), I get the message "You do
not have sufficient security privileges to install devices on this
computer." and am told to contact my site administrator. I'm logged
onto the workstation as the local administrator; there is no domain as
it's a very small network. I've tried everything I can think of,
including running some registry repair utilities, giving the
Administrators group (and the Administrator account explicitly) rights
to everything I can find. I've installed service packs, run the
Windows 2000 repair from the boot CD, etc, etc. but it still gives me
this problem. I could reinstall, I suppose, but there are a lot of
utilities and files on the machine that we use to build other machines,
so I'd _really_ rather not (and it doesn't seem as though I should have
to). Any suggestions on how to resolve this (other than installing
Linux or buying a Mac)?
