On a newly acquired, but used, ThinkPad running on Windows 2000 I haven't
been able to figure out how to prevent the Administrative Tools folder from
automatically opening up towards the end of start-up. Peering into MS-Config
or the Services app in Administrative Tools hasn't shed any light on this,
at least for me.

Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening?

The registry check didn't show the conditions Microsoft describes in the
article, but they seem to know I've been pushing the boundary a bit on
customizing the user interface. It also could be due to the bad experience I
had in installing Open Office which blew out most of the start menu, and I
guess my bad response to that, which I described in an earlier thread.

It's just an annoyance, and I'm prepared to live with it. While I realize
you could never recommend this, I'm wondering if it would also be possible
to delete Administrative Tools from the Start Menu in the registry and
access the tools differently and without any untoward consequences. This is
a single user machine, if that is an issue.

"Administrative Tools" is just a subfolder in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs.
If you delete it then you will delete the various shortcuts in this
folder, which is probably not a good idea.. If it bothers you,
move it to some other location.

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new user account in Users
and Passwords)

Sorry for the delay - I just tried it and the problem disappears in the new
profile. But I moved the folder as Pegasus suggested, and at this point,
with the GUI worked out and all my applications installed including their
custom settings, I think I'm going to stick with the current installation
until/unless something really bad develops. The real problem occurred when I
lost some of my start menu and I rebuilt it on the cheap from All Users,
but, so far the problem has been manageable and limited to some start menu
surprises, and the end user effect has been nil.
