I cannot log on to my database as the admin user although
the admin user exists. As far as I know there is no
password for admin user, but to make sure I tried to clear
the password using the clear password button. this locks
me out of the database and I have to go to access session
to reset the wid

Any ideas what is happening with the admin user account?

If there is no password for the 'admin' user, then you wouldn't even get a
login dialog.

If you secured your database properly, you would not have granted any
permissions to the Admin user. Instead you would have created another user
and made them a member of the Admins group.

Try logging in as that user.

This is what I thought, but it really is not working. I am
baffled! I am the other user who has full admin
permissions through the admins group.

What I am doing is the following:
I use the clear password button in the user and group
dialogue. I then come out of access and try to log in
again. Access opens, but before any login dialog the
message appears as below:

"you do not have permissions to use the "database" object.
Have your system administrator or person who created this
object establish the appropriate permissions for you."

I then have to replace the current mdw file with a backup
copy which takes me back to where I was.

Any ideas??

You are clearing the password for the built-in Admin user - don't do that!
If the 'Admin' user has no password then you won't get a login dialog,
you'll automatically be logging in as 'Admin', which doesn't have any
permissions, thus the message.

Just how are you clearing the password - i.e. you must be logged in as an
admins group member to do this. Can't you therefore clear the password for
your user (other than Admin) that is a member of Admins group?

Got you.
OK the 'Admin' user has a password. On my pc using my
access session, I am prompted for a login and a password.
However, I go to another PC and no such prompt appears, so
as I understand, this person is logging in silently
as 'admin' user using their default system.mdw - is this
correct?
Did I read somewhere that if you set a password
for 'Admin' user then this silent logon was not possible.

We are using access and the database in a Citrix
environment - would that make a difference?

That is correct. And since you can do this, then the database has not been
secured properly. You must follow all the steps oulined in the FAQ, in
order and leaving nothing out.

No you misunderstand. If the Admin user has a password set *in the
workgroup file in use*, you won't get a login prompt. If you setup security
properly, then users *must* use the workgroup you specify (and it would have
a password set for the Admin user, and therefore they must login). If you
don't have it setup correctly, and users are using some other workgroup file
where the Admin user doesn't have a password, then you have missed a step.
They shouldn't be able to even open the database.

Not really. Download and study the FAQ. Setting up security is not
trivial.
