Hi, my wifes laptop came up lame, missing a file on boot-up. I am tring to
do a repair with the XP disc and everything goes fine until it ask for the
admin password. My wife says she has never entered a password. Is there
anything I can do to get around this without a complete reinstall? She has
some pictures she really want to keep. Thanks for any help.

Greetings --

The password being requested is that of the built-in Administrator
account, not the password for any other user accounts you may have
created. Unless you've deliberately set the Administrator's password
via the Management Console (_not_ the Control Panel), it's probably
still blank. WinXP Pro asks you to set the Administrator's password
during installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.

If a repair install is what your after you do not want to choose the option
that enters the repair console. (microsoftease, pressing "R" to repair is
the wrong option to perform a repair. :-) )

See at Michael Steven's excellent site;

Pay particular attention to step #3.
