Is it possible to ban the users sending obvious spam messages?
Is it possible to establish a policy forbidding bad language?

I am here to read about printers and stuff and not insults and spam!

Its an unmoderated group, there should be a summary of it somewhere
detailing limits on advertising and binary messages etc, but they will
only get enforced if complaints are made to an offender's ISP and if
they then feel like doing something about it.

The other solution is to set your software to ignore certain types of
post and certain posters.

There isn't one. It is an un-moderated newsroup. as are all newsgroups in
the alt. heirarchy.

Given that the newsgroup is un-moderated, no, because nobody has the
authority to enforce such a policy. The only possibility would be
peer-pressure, and that is unlikely.

Then you would do well to read selectively and use the filtering that is
built into your newsreader.
