I have looked on the site and am looking in books, but I
can't find how to allow a restart of the computer in MS
DOS mode. When it prompts for a log on I use the local
admin, so it doesn't make sense to me. Please assist.

I am not sure what you are trying to do but there are a few options. See the KB link
below that describes Recovery Console which allows limited access and utilities to
the operating system and will require administrator credentials. You can also boot
into safe mode command prompt. Using a boot floppy from Windows 98/ME will boot the
computer into DOS, but you will be unable to access ntfs file system. There are
utilities that allow you to boot from a floppy to access ntfs files. There are free
utilities that do that, but allow read access only. The ones that allow full access
are not cheap. --- Steve

Hrvb,

If you are running Windows 2000 there is not a Dos mode. (There is a
dos-like command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)) Was this a fresh install or
an upgrade?

I apologize for not letting you know it's windows 2000. I
am trying to F8 into safe mode MS DOS and it tells me that
function has been disabled by the administrator. This
computer has been up and running for over a year and I am
tring to clean a worm from it. Thank you for any
assistance you can give.

Try running gpedit.msc on your computer to bring up Local Group Policy and
go to user configuration/administrative templates/system where access to
command prompt may be disabled. If the setting is "not defined" try setting
it to disabled to see if it helps. --- Steve

On the knowledge base article 315396 I am trying to do the
second item "How to start the computer in safe mode". I
hit F8 and choose safe mode with command prompt or MS DOS
then it asks me for a user name a password. I put the
local admin username and password in and it gives me the
message that the administrator has disabled starting the
computer in safe mode with MS DOS. Any additional
assistance you can give would be much appreciated. Thank
you.
