Adjust audio levels

I have a live band video where the audio is distorted. Is there a way to
adjust the audio level, similar to how it's done in Final Cut Pro, to
eliminate the distortion without lowering the volume of the whole movie.

Best to take the audio into an audio editor, such as the very good and free
audacity and then re-import the adjust audio.
Distorted audio is just that though, there is no way to make it undistorted,
but good adjustment can make it sound a little better.

Drop the whole video onto the music/audio track and save as a wav file then
import into your audio editor.
