Hi

Have successfully setup ad hoc wireless network at home.

Am using both file sharing and internet connection sharing/gateways on the
clients (3 clients)

During the process have dropped most defences and security products to get
things going, and I am now concerned about protecting the host PC and the
clients. For now I accept that I don't have WEP enabled so for now the
network will not be secure from other wireless users, but given my rural
location this isn't too big a problem. I am more concerned about unleashing
the clients (my kids!) to the internet, and what can get through the
internet connection to the client PC's.

I have currently got Norton AV and XP firewall running on the host, but,
Is this enough to protect the clients when accessing the internet?
Do I need AV software on each PC?
Do I need firewall software on each PC?

What else can I do to give the clients the same protection the host has?

All help much appreciated

Congratulations on getting the network going and for your concern
about security!

Each computer needs its own AV program to protect against viruses in
E-mail and other sources.

Enabling XP's Internet Connection Firewall on the host's shared
Internet connection protects all of the computers from undesired
incoming access by Internet hackers. However, it doesn't protect any
of them against undesired outgoing access by spyware or Trojan horse
programs that get onto your computers. If that's a concern, run a
firewall with that capability on each computer, making sure that the
one on the host computer is compatible with ICS.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it all a try, but am a bit worried about
what firewalling the clients will do to all the ICS and file sharing. Slowly
does it and one at a time I guess :)
