I have only one contacts folder in my OUtlook Address Book. However when I go
toit, the contacts are not organized as they are in my contacts folder. Some
show up like the File As fiel. Other don't. In my File As fiels I have set up
category codes, then last name, first name or category code, company name.
the address book does not consistently capture the file as field.

You did not even specify your Outlook version.
The most frequent question asked about the Outlook Address Book is "why
won't it sort the way I told it to?" Simple answer. Even though we all know
that our Outlook Address Book is simply a view of our Contacts, Microsoft
did not configure it to abide by the settings we chose for our Contacts.
Instead, they hid the sort settings for the Outlook Address Book where no
one could ever find them. Depending on your version and mail support mode of
Outlook, you can sort the Outlook Address Book this way:

98/2000 in Corporate/Workgroup mode:
Tools menu > Services > Highlight the Outlook Address Book service > Click
Properties > Set sort order

98/2000 Internet Mail Only:
Tools menu > Address Book > View menu > Sort by

Outlook 2002/2003:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

Note that your options are only to sort by "First, Last" or by "File As." So
if you want your Outlook Address Book to sort by "Last, First," or by
"Company" you must have your Contacts' File As fields configured that way.

I am using Outlook 2003.
My issue is not with the sorting of the contacts. It is with the manner in
which they are being shown in the Outlook Address book. Every contact has in
its File As field a code. i.e. CL, Paul, Rhoda or PB, Microsoft etc. I do
this so I can see all contacts by category when downloading to PDA. HOwever
when I go to create Distibution list from Address book, it is impossible as
the Address book does not show all contacts with their File As Code. It
completely ignores some but not all. I can't figure out which field the
address book is using when it sorts the contacts. It does not appear to be
the full name field or the file as field bu rather a combination of the two.
HOw do I obtain consistancy?

Did you even read my post? If so, state what you tried and what happened.
