prior to the last time i re-installed winxp & officexp. outlook & the fax
printer had their own addressbooks.

now i have somehow gotten them entwined so that the fax printer wants to use
outlooks as a place to stick stuff.

which i could live with but if i dont open outlook first & minimize it
things get all buggered up.

how can i tell the fax printer to go ahead and open outlook, or quit using
the outlook addressbook.

thanks.

Assuming you are using Windows XP Fax, it will always default to using the
Outlook Address Book whenever Outlook is installed, under the assumption
that anyone using Outlook will be using Outlook to manage Contacts. It only
uses the Windows Address Book if Outlook is not installed.
Until now, that assumption has always been correct. Why do you want to
install Outlook but not use the Outlook Address Book?

the faxing i am using is called 'MS Fax Console', is that different that
outlook fax?

when i want to print something THAT (fax) is a choice in my printers. in
the past, even tho outlook was installed, this fax console never used the
outlook datafiles, just must have made its own and i blissfully went on not
knowing the hidden truth here. i dont necessarily want that, just saying
that is how it was.

now when i am attempting to print to the fax, i must manually startup
outlook and minimize it so it can find the addressbook, otherwise the system
tries to use outlooks addressbook but decides it cant find it. i get this
message 'ms outlook...the address list could not be displayed. the contacts
folder associated with the address list could not be opened ; it may have
been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. for information on
how to remove this folder from the outlook address book, see ms outlook
help.' and i press OK. then it brings up a blank contacts list.

i then cancel the whole thing. open outlook and try again.

the system starts up outlook 1st, so it can get at the OL addressbook. i
dont mind using the addressbook, just am irked at not being able to get to
it w/o the overhead of outlook starting up 1st. if outlook isnt open

Windows XP Fax never uses anything but the Outlook Address Book once Outlook
is installed and configured correctly.
Apparently you never did (and still don't) have Outlook installed correctly.
It should not be necessary for you to launch Outlook first when using the
Fax Wizard, and those error messages indicate your Outlook Address Book
Service is corrupt. That's what you need to fix.

It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset the connection.
Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove the Outlook
Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it
before you can get it to work.

Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book. If it is not listed, back up one step
and add it. If it is, then click on Change. to make sure the Contacts
folder(s) you want to display are listed. You may need to enable the
Contacts Folder as an e-mail address book by R clicking the Folder >
Properties and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box.
Make sure you restart Outlook after making these changes.
