Address Window not performing search

I inadvertantly downloaded third party software that kept
taking me through their site for internet searches. After
2 hours I finally found the software hidden in my files
and I deleted them....I tried the uninstall but it
wouldn't work.

Now I can't perform searches using the address window on
my browser. I've already reinstalled Internet
Explorerer...didn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Allyson

This is the wrong newsgroup for this question, but I'll do what I can.

I'd be willing to bet it's something like xupiter or something like that.
It has a nasty habit of revising certain sections of the registry and is a
royal pain to clean. Whatever it is, it's probably in the registry.

First, I'd go to www.tucows.com or www.download.com and get a trial copy of
Spybot: Search & Destroy and run it. Be careful what you delete. You'll
probably find some cookies from that third party vendor that need to be
removed and it may even detect some registry entries for the same company.

Next, if it was, say, xupiter, then I'd run regedit and search for "xupiter"
and deal with any entries found. In my case, it replaced the default search
engine with itself and I had to replace it with the original default.

If this doesn't help, try posting this in the Internet Explorer newsgroup.
