In Win98 I can just type a word in the address toolbar that's part of the
Start menu where the task icons are and IE would pop up with Google search
results of that word.
But in W2K pro, when I type a word in the address toolbar, it automatically
inserts http://"word"/, so obviously when IE pop up it can't load Google.
Where is the setting for this?

Scroll down to the "Search from Address Bar" section and choose the setting
you want.

I don't see it. Which option is it?

It is not in the Browsing section. You have to scroll down to the Search
from Address Bar section.

On the IE6 tool bar, click on the search icon

When the sidebar window pops up on the left side, click on custom

At the bottom of the pop up window, click on autosearch settings

Choose a site (I think Google is best) and make sure the Just display result
in the main window is displayed in the lower pull down menu.

Adm C

I currently have "Just display result in the main window" selected.

That's what I currently have and within IE, it goes directly to Google fine.
But typing the search word in the address bar on the start menu
automatically inserts the "http://" which of course invalidates the page. Is
there a setting for that address bar?
When I had W98, start menu address bar behaves the same as it does within
IE6.

That's what I have. Currently it's selected on "Just display result in main
window"

tiki2k,
The next thing to do is to scan your system for the possibility of
unknown\unwanted spyware or parasites that may be causing your problem(s).

This is a brand new machine with a clean install of W2K. It just seems like
a Windows default kinda thing.
Are all settings regarding the address bar pertains to "all" address bar
behaviour?

tiki2k,
Did you scan your machine as suggested?
Perhaps the "URLSearchHook" entry is corrupt or altered (usually parasite
related)
Shows up in HijackThis as: [example]
"R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing"
