when clicking the "to" button to get an email from my
contact list, a Microsoft Outlook window pops up that
says "The address list could not be displayed. The
Contactsfolder associated with this adress list could not
be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do
not have permission. For information on how to remove this
folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft
Outlook Help."

Now i don't want to remove this folder from the Outlook
Address Book, because all of my contact are there. I hope
there is another way.

Thank you,

Post your Outlook version if you need help. Post the steps that created your
problem.

It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset the connection,
depending on your Outlook version. Note that in some instances you may
actually have to remove the Outlook Address Book completely from your
Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Outlook 2000, Corp/Workgroup:
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.

Outlook 2002:
Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

Russ,

Russ i am using outlook 2002 10.4717.4219 sp-2. My OAB is corrupt. I
can see the contacts when i go directly into contacts. In a new
message when i click on "to" the 'Select names' box appears with
'contacts' in the select names box
and there are zero names listed. When i use the 'new' button to add a
new contact it does not show in the current display but it does add it
to the contact file. When i send the memo it comes back and says the
address is not found. I have followed your steps that you have
listed. I verified that the OAB is in the list and the 'show this
folderas an email address book' is checked. I have gone in and out of
outlook each time. I have tried removing OAB from the directories and
starting from scratch to no advail. I tried running the repair tool
scanpct. I even went so far as to completely remove outlook from my
system and reinstalling it. This all started when i tried to
syncronize my contacts with my Sony palm. At one point all of my
contacts were duplicated. I deleted all of my contacts an imported
them from a backup. When i went to send an email i realized that i
had problem with the contact file.
Thanks in advance for you help.

Russ,

In desperation, I searched for all *.pst files and copied them to a
hold folder and then deleted them. I opened outlook and it prompted
me to create a new pst file. I removed the contact association like
you documented and closed outlook. I then opened outlook and followed
you directions >>> Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or
change existing directories or address books", and click OK. If you
don't see the OAB in the Directories and Address Books list, click the
Back button, then select "Add a new directory or address book", then
"Additional Address Books", and add the OAB. Then keep clicking Back
until you get back to the first dialog box, and go back to the
Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier. Once the OAB
appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make sure the
Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties,
clicking the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this
folder as an E-mail address book" box. I MADED sure that I restarted
Outlook after making these changes.

Now after all of that I opened outlook and started a new memo from
inbox. When I clicked the "TO" it took me to the "select names" box.
"Contact" showed in the ‘show names from box'. I entered and new name
using the add button, entered some information, clicked ‘save' and
when I returned to the ‘select names' box there were zero names
listed. I closed the select names box and the new memo. I clicked the
contact folder in the folder list and the new contact was there. I
tried again to open a new memo, click ‘to' and NO names were shown.

I have searched and read for hours in this Goggle group and all I seem
to find is your stand set of steps listed partially above.

I have been using outlook for years and I am going crazy here. Please
help. If you need more info I will be glad to supply.

You shouldn't be entering new Contacts in the Address Book interface. That's
not what it's for.
Enter new Contacts in the Contacts Folder. Once you do, they will then
appear in the Address Book.
