address books

I am using Outlook 2003 SP2

When I click on address book under the Tools tab, or if I click on the
'To...' icon when creating an email I get the following message:

The address list cound not be displayed. The contacts folder
associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved
or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove
this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help."

When I click 'OK' I get a dialoge box for 'Select Names'. In the upper
right corner I have 6 options under the pull down menu for 'Show Names from
the:'

Only 2 of the 6 actually have names in them, and they are MY addresses.

I obviously need to delete the others or rename, move... something, I just
can't figure it out.

I have looked in the help section and in this forum and I do not see the
answer to my problem.

Brian, thanks I feel like I should have been able to figure that out, but
this is a little different version of Outlook than I am used to, I didn't
know of the directory / address book relationship.

I have now gotten rid of the 'bad' address books, but I am now left with one
that must be a default address book called 'contacts', along with two others
that I have created.

The thing is, the 'contacts' address book is empty, and the first book that
outlook looks in so it never finds any names.

Can I :
get rid of 'contacts' address book
rename it to one that I have created that is populated?
have outlook look in 'all' the address books when searching for a
name?

I'm getting close, thanks again,

I don't know how many Contacts folders you have, but you can make them all
address books on the Outlook Address Book tab of their properties. There
will be one Contact folder that is in your delivery location that should
always appear in the address book and when you add contacts, they'll be
placed in that contact folder by default.

If I were in your shoes, I'd remove the Outlook Address Book service from
your mail profile entirely (Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing
directories or address books>Next. Select the Outlook Address Book service
and click Remove, then Finish), stop and restart Outlook, then add the OAB
service back in (Tools>E-mail Accounts>Add a new directory or address
book>Next>Additional Address Books>Next>Outlook Address Book>Next>Finish).
I'd also stop and restart Outlook here, but it may not be strictly
necessary. FInally, right-click your delivery location Contacts folder,
choose Properties, then the Outlook Address Book tab and make sure the box
labeled "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" is checked. Click OK.
