Why can't I sort the address book by the last name? I've tried changing the
display name, which worked in the '03 version, but it doesn't work any more.
I don't know any business executives that sort their address books by the
FIRST name! Please update the software!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or perhaps you might want to simply follow the directions we post here every
day. Are we to presume that you have made some changes in your setup or
version? If you need the instructions spoon-fed to you, then you better
provide at least that much information. The method remains the same in
Outlook 2007.

Russ,
There is no need to be so hostile. If my question sounded hostile then I
apologize. I know how to work outlook '00, '03 and '07. I like most of the
upgrades in '07 but the address book (not the contact list) can't be sorted
in any other manner, at least according to the Outlook Help Desk. I was
online with them for an hour and 1/2 the other day and they said there is no
way to change the order of the pop-up address book. In the '00 and '03
version one could change the display name (in the email settings of the
contact database) and then when the address book was opened up the email
addresses would be in alphabetic order by however the email address was
filed. I went though my 500 (or so) clients and contacts and changed the
display layout so that each name would be sorted by the last name. If the
teck support people were wrong then i'd appreciate knowing what you've
figured out.
Thanks
Lauren

They are wrong. As I said, the same method is used in Outlook 2007 as every
other version:
Go to Tools > Account Settings > Address Book Tab > Outlook Address Book >
Change... > Set sort order there

In no version of Outlook did the address book sort by the email display as
field. The Outlook Address Book either sorts by "First, Last" or "File As."
Still does. When you set your File As fields correctly, the address book
will sort the way you want. No question has been answered more frequently
than this one in this group.
