Word 2000, W2K
I'm trying to find an easy way to use an address book in Word. I have always
liked WordPerfect's Address Book for it's ease of use--a couple of clicks
puts an address on an envelope or label. I don't know how to get an address
book where Word can recognize it.
The closest I have come is to use Outlook Contacts, but additions to the
Contacts folder often aren't visible in Word. I also have Parson
Technology's Address Book, but can't get them into a form accessible by
Word. (Their file type is .abx).

Is there a better way?

Thanks

This is *exactly* what Outlook's contacts list does. You can have any number
of contacts lists and they will show up in Word provided you define their
properties as address books in Outlook (the default address book is so
defined already). Under what circumstances are the contacts list addresses
not visible?

If I enter a new name and address in Outlook, then go to Word/Tools/Letters
and Mailings/Envelopes and Labels/Insert Address/Personal, the newly added
name and address doesn't appear. Sometimes, many days later, I will find
that new addition, but by that time I have typed it in again (in Word). This
isn't very useful.

I have tried and failed to reproduce this issue. Addresses added to Outlook
are immediately available in the address book, provided the address book
isn't open on screen in Word at the time. But even then if you cancel the
address book and re-open it the newly added address immediately becomes
available. Note that if you use the name field instead of the company field
to add a company name, the sort order will be a little odd.

I don't know what the problem is for me. They just don't show up. Is there
some way to tell Word where to look for my addresses? Also, Outlook is not
my default program for e-mail, but I can't see why that would matter.

Not having Outlook as the e-mail application would certainly affect the
issue. The address book runs on the back of the e-mail application, which
has to be a MAPI compliant e-mail app, which effectively means Outlook and
Microsoft Exchange. The latter is an expensive option for corporate use.

I have been looking through Outlook and find that there are three
repositories of names and addresses--Outlook Address Book, Contacts, and
Personal Address Book. I have put all my names and addresses in Contacts,
and that perhaps is the wrong place for Word to find them. Word looks in
Outlook Address Book and there are *no* entries there. Other choices within
Word are Contacts which has some, but only half of the names I have in the
"Contacts" you open when Outlook opens and you click on Contacts there. What
am I missing? How do I get all my data into the one of the three that Word
wants it in?

In Outlook - delete the Outlook Address Book(s) (tools > e-mail accounts >
view of change address book.) Then reset the properties of the contacts list
to display as an Outlook address book (if it doesn't, re-add it from the
previous screen). This will rebuild the Outlook address book, which is the
only one you need to use from within Word.

If this doesn't cure the problem, then check with the Outlook newsgroup.
