I have read through the other postings on the community board and am still
confused. None of the replies seems to exactlyl match my problem, though some
come close.

I have Microsoft Office as part of my Office 11 suite. I have been using
Outlook as my default email application, but as I also list on eBay under a
different ID and use software which works best with Outlook Express (lets
call it 'AS'), I have also set up an Express account. I have Outlook set as
the default on the machine, but before using AS, I change the default to
Express and open up that account. Seems to work well, and any emails that
happen to come in to the express account whilst that is the default, I
transfer back to my normal Outlook application just before closing down
Express.

But here's the problem. When I was experimenting with various options, I
have lost the facility to show my Outlook contacts as an address list. If I
go to 'tools/address book' in Outlook, I can see all the details as a simple
list of names and emails. One of the other postings on this board seems to
imply that this is simply an automatic list of any email addresses that have
been sent in the past, but if I click on one of the entries, then the usual
contact card comes up, with addresses, phone numbers etc. So they must be
there somewhere! HELP PLEASE! :-?

That is normal behavior. That is how Outlook shows your contacts as an address list. If that is the only symptom, then there is nothing wrong with your system.

This, too, is normal. These are the items stored in your Contacts folder in Outlook.

Sue - thanks for the rapid response. But I am very puzzled now. I have been
using Outlook on this PC and others for the last 3 years and I have always
been able to view my contacts by clicking on 'contacts' folder, shown bottom
left of screen in the view I have set up - until now. If I do this, all I see
is an empty contacts folder - but all those details I laboriously typed into
each separate contact card in the past must be there somewhere because I can
still see them if I follow the steps below.

It may be that there is nothing wrong with the system - with a bit of luck,
it might just be that I need to change the view, but I just can't see how.

That sounds like Outlook Express. I thought we were talking about Outlook.

No Sue, I can confirm that its definitely Outlook. I do know the difference
between the two applications!
 
Then maybe you can explain in more detail just what you clicked on. Outlook 2003 has a Contacts button at the bottom of the navigation pane, not a "contacts folder." Clicking that button will display your default Contacts folder, plus links to any other folders in the current mail profile. You can also see your Contacts folder by clicking the Folder List button in the navigation pane and then clicking on that folder in the folder hiearchy list.

Make sure you have the status bar turned on (Tools | Status Bar) so you'll be able to see at a glance at the bottom of the Outlook window if the folder is using a filtered view. A filter could hide all items in the folder.
