Address Bar Search

I've scoured the Microsoft Support site, and haven't found a solution to
this problem... surely I'm not the only one?

I recently used Ad-Aware to uninstall a bunch of spyware from my computer,
"My Search Bar" among them (it may be the culprit). In any case, ever since
then I haven't been able to search from my address bar. Internet Explorer
used to take any words that I typed in that were obviously not web addresses
and run MSN search using those words - it was great. NOW, however, it
converts the spaces between my query words to %20 and tries to find a
website with that name, no exceptions. It's very frustrating, and I can't
find a fix anywhere!

For example, typing "microsoft support" returns
"http:///? microsoft support" and a "the page cannot be displayed" error
message. In the past it would go to msn search and search for "microsoft
support"

Thanks for any help anybody can provide!

Hello,

Try this: IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, When searching (o) just
display the results in the main window.

Kind regards

Thanks for all your help, but I'm now wondering if we actually had the same
problem in the first place. I only wonder because the Brown University fix
didn't help one iota. My searches from the address bar are still converted
from "search terms" to http:///? search town Another suggestion from
someone was to run "hijackthis" (http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/) which turned
out to be a helpful little program, but didn't work either. I've even tried
reinstalling internet explorer.

Thanks again for your help!

Subject: Search Problem Solution Found

Otter,
Sorry to keep bothering you but I found a solution to our problem. It
seems as if the times on the Community Newsgroups page don't stay
consistent. The posting I was telling you about is now times 8:29 am. They
suggested a Windows fix...which didn't work. They also suggested a Symantec
fix which I skipped b/c I do not like turning off System Restore and they
said many reported it didn't work. The next suggestion, which was highly
recommended over the Smantec Fix is the Brown University fix at
http://software.brown.edu/dist/w-cleanqhosts.html now that worked
immediately...I didn't even have to reboot or turn of system restore.

Good luck...Nikki

Subject: A Possible Solution to Search Problem

Otter,
On Page 5 of the Community Newgroups I found a question "When I goto
Google or Yahoo Search" dated Oct 30 2003 at 6:13pm. The reply seems to be
a fix to the problem we have. Now of course I would like to tell you that
it worked but unfortunately, me being the genius I am I decided to download
the Windows fix and then do a virus scan before rebooting the computer, and
since I did not catch on to my stupidity untill it scanned a truck load of
files....I decideded to let it finish up and see what else is lurking on
this lovely computer of mine. Being as it's past midnight this thing will
scan while I sleep and I'll probably try to see how well the patch worked in
the morning. But just in case I don't have the time I thought I give you a
heads up and let try it out also! Good Luck!

Subject: IE and Search Problems

Hi,
I wish I could help but I can't. But I do want to ask if you find out
any solutions that work please e-mail them to me. I had problems removing
MySearchBar and wrote them about it. After a few e-mails they finally sent
me an uninstaller program that I used. Removing it off of my desktop hasn't
caused any problemd. But my laptop has been screwed. I haven't been able
to search using almost all search engines...MSN, Google, Jeeves,
Go/Infoseek....yadda...yadda...yadda. I tried uninstalling IE6.0 but can't
so then I tried installing the update but that can't install completely
either. I will try taking my laptop back to my school where I got it from
but with my job I have no idea when I can find the time. So, I beg of you
to please send me word if you happen to find a mirale cure for this
problem!! Thanks!!

Nikki

Otter7917,
Did you post your log from HijackThis to their Forum?

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic", copy and paste hijackthis.log into your new message.
