address bar problems

i recently installed new printer software for an hp 2710.

my win xp, ie 6 sp 2 worked fine before but now:

when i type in the toolbar, and this goes for any address: www.google.com
it take approx. 3-4 min to go to the page

when i type in: http://www.google.com
it goes straight there. also my homepage comes right up and my favorites
all come right up.

it appears that it will only take the formal usage of the address to include
http://.....
it never did that before. i think that the printer software, since it is a
network used printer, may have edited something in the reg. but im not sure.

i would appreciate any help. thanks

Using Regedit, browse to the following registry key and make sure the noted
setting is correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]
"Append Completion"="yes"

also see the following values:

"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"

You may have to Restart the computer.

i made the changes and it only completes the address if i hit ctrl-enter.
but if i go to an org address or edu... etc. it always types in the .com at
the end.

it still will not complete the formal address if i just type www.???.org
(enter)

Check the below Registry entries vs. yours:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
Default="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"
