Address bar problem

Some strange behaviour with the address bar. When I click on the drop-down
arrow at the end of the address bar to highlight previously-entered sites the
hourglass appears, IE seems to hang and the Zone Alarm icon in the Taskbar
shows a lot of Internet traffic going on.

This happened the day after XP installed an automatic update this week -
could there be any connection? Anti-virus and Spyware software up to date.

Try clearing your history at tools\internet options\clear history button.
If you are still having problems, shut down all programmes and boot into dos
if you are using Windows 95 or 98. If using Windows ME use an appropriate
disc to access DOS. Run the following commands from the windows directory,
typically c:\windows\>

smartdrv
deltree history
deltree tempor~1

Reboot using ctrl, alt, del if using Windows 95 or 98. If using WindowsME
remember to remove the boot floppy.

Windows 2000 users will have to log in as Administrator to be able to delete
the folders in question directly from within Windows Explorer.

Windows XP users will be able to delete the folders from within Windows
Explorer as well, though they may need to log in as Administrator.

NOTE:

Different operating systems use different paths to the history, temporary
internet files and cookies folders. Check your system to make sure that you
are using the correct path for your machine. For example, you may find your
folders are located at ...\documents and settings\{identity}\{dir} or
similar.

I have a problen that arose afer a recent Windows Update.
WhenI enter a URL in the Address Bar on the Taskbar, IE 6 opens, but there's
no connection traffic and the URL I entered in the Taskbar Address Bar doen't
appear in the Address Bar in IE. Also, ZoneAlarm doesn't ask me to "Allow"or
"deny" access to the Internet. It's as if the Taskbar Address Bar knows to
open IE, but IE doen't understnad that it's supposed to connect to the
Internet unless the URL is entered in the Address Bar in IE.

I know this is a lit of words, but I hope the details are helpful

Thanks!

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

5. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Frank,

Thank you for your efforts, but I do need some clarification.
First, I'm running XP Home with SP2 and all current Windows Updates installed.

When I run msconfig, there are no promps, just tabs for General, SYSTEM,
INI, WIN.INI, Services and Startup. msconfig offers no prompts where I can
choose to "Expand File."

Thanks for your help!

Doug

Thank you, Robert.

Turing off ZoneAlarm got my Taskbar Address Bar functioning again.

You pointed straight to the fault. Is this a common side-effect of firewalls?

Again, thanks,

Doug
