To configure the *default* search engine to use in the Address bar, open
the Search pane (click on the Search toolbar button). Click the
Customize button. Click the AutoSearch button and select which engine
you want to use as the default.
If you want to use a search engine other than the default and you want
to know what ones are available using which prefix or how to configure
you own search selections, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/previous/webaccess/ie5wa.asp and
install the IE5 Web Accessories (works for IE6, too). After install,
you'll have a QuickSearch entry in your Links toolbar. Click it to open
it. You'll see the prefixes currently defined, like "av <string" for a
search on <string> using AltaVista. You can also define your own
prefixes. I defined the following for Google:
For Google Web Search: g =
http://www.google.com/search?q=%s
For Google Groups Search: gg =
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%s
For Google Images Search: gi =
http://images.google.com/images?q=%s
For Google Directory Search: gd =
http://www.google.com/search?cat=gwd%/Top&q=%s
For Google News Search: gn =
http://news.google.com/news?q=%s
Note the doubled percent sign ("%%") in the URL specified in the
QuickSearch definition for a Google Directory Search. It is needed to
escape the "%" used for the
"%2F" hexadecimal value for the "/" character needed in the resultant
URL (the original URL was
http://www.google.com/search?cat=gwd/Top&q=%s). I can then use g, gg,
gi, gd, or gn for Google search without having anything of Google
installed, including its toolbar. However, I still use the Google
Toolbar because:
- I don't like to mix my URL and search histories together in one list.
- I don't have to remember g, gg, gi, gd, and gn are used for the
various types of Google searches.
- Lets me search the current site rather than the web.
- Highlighter button to show me the words in the results or in the
linked-to page that were used in the search, plus Word Find buttons to s
earch for individual words used in the search.
- Search through dictionaries.
- If you don't have a popup blocker, version 2 of their toolbar provides
one. Don't know how good it is; I use PopUp Cop.
- Page Ranking, Categories, and Page Info if you want those advanced
feature but be warned that your web navigation will be tracked when you
use those options. Your URL gets modified to route through their
servers before going to the intended destination site. I don't use
those features. Going through their servers could make connections more
unreliable since you are depending on their servers routing you to the
destination.
