I have done this:

To enable the address bar, click Toolbars on the View
menu, and then click Address bar. I have also chosen
Tools/Folder Options and ticked Display Full Path in
Address Bar.

All to no avail. The Address Bar does appear (so does
Links when I add that too) but is hard up against the
right margin / side of screen. Address is clearly visible
as a word, but not as a bar. This Address Bar appears
clearly in Internet Explorer with addresses showing.

I thought I was a very experienced user having taught
computing for nearly 20 years ... any help gratefully
received.

Aha!
Unlock the Toolbars...... has cured the problem!!
Nothin like writing down your question and then
discovering the answer yourself two minutes later!!

Yes, by default the addressbar will be flushed to the right and
locked.
What you have to do then is right-click on the bar, and select
"lock..." to unlock it.
Then you can drag things around with impunity. When you decide the
layout you like, the feature of locking it is beneficial just so
things don't get accidentally moved around with the wild actions of
your mouse.

I'm assuming your problem is with *Windows Explorer* or folders, not IE
windows I'm not sure how many folders or subfolders you have, but could
this possibly be impacted by that and helped by increasing *the folder view
size limit?* by manually editing the registry at the keys below, or
probably the easiest and best way is to use Kelly's convenient tweak to do
it for you here. See if that will help correct this:

At Kelly's site: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm use Tweak #2
Left Side: Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000

or you could manually edit it here

and put in a high limit BagMRU Size REG_DWORD 0x000003E8:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:000003e8

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:000003e8

Folders will only inherit a particular view type if you don't re-enable
"Remember each folder's view settings" before actually viewing the folders.
This checkbox must remain cleared, and you must view the subfolders in order
for them to inherit the proper setting - before re-enabling the checkbox
next to that option. Once you have viewed the folders, you can then
re-enable the "Remember" setting to ensure that they remain unchanged. You
may have to open all the folders before checking that "Remember" setting.
