'address bar - highlights then deletes what I type

I'm running IE 6 on XP Home, both fully patched. I've run AdAware
and SpyBot, both come up clean.

When I type something in the address bar, something like, let's say:

www.

then the "www:" becomes selected text, so that whatever I type next
destroys the "www."

It really doesn't matter what I type in the address bar. If I pause
for a split-second, what I've already typed becomes highlighted, and
then what I type next overwrites it.

Any hints, please?

Try turning off Autocomplete settings for Internet Address in the Internet
Options control panel.

Yes, I should have said I have Autocomplete turned off.

Suspect malware. Tasks running in the background should stay in the
background and not switch to the foreground however briefly.
Your problem can be simulated by doing some typing then pressing
Alt-Tab and Alt-Tab.

Use Task Manager (press Ctrl-Shift-Esc) and use the Processes tab
to figure out which program is interrupting and changing focus.

Otherwise probably the safest thing to do will be to pre-type your URL
in a Notepad window and then copy and paste the whole thing into the
Address bar. Then it won't matter whether there is a change in focus
before you press Enter because even if the URL becomes highlighted
you will still be able to press Enter.

As long as you know that this problem exists and you still want to type
into the Address bar it also could be helpful for you to get into the habit
of pressing End frequently. That would make it more likely that you
would be appending your next character to the end of what you have
already typed.

Good luck
