Hi, my Internet Explorer 6 address bar is not working. When I try typing an
address in it, it just highlights what's in there and nothing else happens.
I have to use the File->Open option to access a new page. I already ran
CCleaner, AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, Spybot, nothing seems
to find the problem in my Windows XP Home Edition. I didn't install anything.
It started happening this afternoon, and it's very annoying, since I'm
always accessing the Internet. Can anyone please help? Thanks!

Hi,
This might be a problem with the History folder or it's index.dat file. When
you ran CCleaner, did you clear History and index. dat?

Next try deleting the History folder manually
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm Delete the folder- not just the
files. Or, Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm can usually delete
the History folder in XP.

Or, it's possible that you have malware installed that Ad-aware, Spybot,
etc. didn't catch. Post a HijackThis log to one of these forums for help:

Look for the proper forum and an "Important- Read This First" message so
that you follow proper procedure.

HI malu :-)

In addition to Don's good advice, you might also try the following;

Set the Address Bar to IE/XP Default
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced
Scroll down to the "Search from the address bar" section.
Choose your preferred option.

Download the fix - Reset Search:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg
This will restore your default Search functionality. However, if you had
any custom adjustments you have made will have to re-select them.

Otherwise, after typing in the word you want to search for in the address
bar, hold down the ctrl key after pressing enter.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for the information. I tried all that, but nothing worked. An
interesting note: when I am in Windows XP Home Edition Safe Mode, the
Address Bar works just fine. Do you think it might be some BHO or ActiveX
that is installed? How can I remove all of them safely? Thanks.
