address bar does not fill in http://

For some reason when I type www.anysite.com, it no longer automatically
fills in the http:// in front of it. Does anyone know if there is a
keyboard command that turns it on and off? I may have hit the wrong
combination by mistake.

Thanks,

Larry

Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
Open Regedit to the following locations and verify the below default
entries:
Start | Run (type) "regedit" (no quotes)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

Note: edit as needed, always Export before editing.

I'm having the same problem. This didn't seem to work for me, but there are
a lot of quotes in your response below plus an @ sign that I'm not sure are
to be included/excluded.

Can you please post EXACTLY what should be input, without quote signs. Thx.
Any other ideas if this still doesn't work? TIA

Hi Gary - The quotes that are there are supposed to be there in what
follows. I've also attached just the registry changes as a file,
FixURLPrefix.zip which may be easier for you. Unzip this and double click
on the extracted .reg file to install it. If you use this file, then BACKUP
your Registry first, and if it doesn't help, you can restore it. Following
the Registry changes, there are some additional recommendations by Mike
Burgess, MVP that you can try if the Registry fix doesn't help.

Hi Gary - No, there won't be any quotes when you view it using Regedit. You
only see the quotes on the exported .reg file. Those values look fine if
that's what you're now seeing with Regedit internally [without the quotes,
of course :) ]
