Hi, i just built my computer last few months. My computer respond kind of
slow when i opened up many program especially winamp3. I'm just wondering
that adding an extra RAM would make a different. And, is the brand of the
RAM an important issue that need to be considered when buying one. Here is
my parts:
- Asus A7V8X SATA motherboard
- AMD 2100+
- 256 pc2700 RAM

I don't know about "many programs", but Winamp3 just takes a while to load.
Considerably longer than most of the programs on my system.

256MB should be ok for most desktop applications ... unless you do heavy
image, audio, or video editing.

If you plan to upgrade: The 'brand' of RAM is not as important as it's speed
ratings. As long as it is CL2/2.5 and the speed you desire (PC2700, PC3200)
it should be fine.

I personally would not run a modern system with less than 512MB, but, like I
said, 256 should be alright as long as you don't tax your system too much.

Winamp3 does not take long to load on my computer. I'm using 512 megs of
PC2100...perhaps you should try upgrading.

Look at Windows Task Manager and see how much memory is being used.
Then make your decision.

I run 768 MB of RAM on a AMD 1800+ and found WinAmp3 to be just a slow and
appalling product (I must admit, I base this on one of the first 3.xx
versions). Try installing Winamp 2.91 (also at www.winamp.com) and see if
your problem is fixed before spending any money on RAM, I doubt WinAmp needs
more RAM.

I'll second that. Winamp 2.x rocks. 3.x is an AOL-ified piece of junk.

Before running out to buy more RAM:

-Defragment the harddrive. Fragmentation can slow an app's load time.

-Make sure DMA is enabled for each drive on your system [except the floppy
drive of course ]. DMA is probably enabled by default but on some systems
for a variety of reasons it is not.

-Also check to see what's in your Start Up folder and what is set to go in
the registry's run keys - you know about the run keys, eh? You can delete
anything you do not like, but be careful. Make a backup of the particular
key you plan to edit BEFORE editing! Anyway, by emptying the Startup folder
and trimming the run keys you prevent too many little useless apps loading
into memory at startup and filling your system tray with icons for
everything which slows only things down.

Now, has its load speeded up? If not then now use performance monitor to
determine memory usage. If it indicates massive amounts of memory used then
obtain and install more RAM.
