Hello, my family gave me Windows XP Pro for the holidays. I have two
computers now networked peer to peer using W2K Pro. I guess this question
has been asked many times but I searched and could not find anything. I will
do a clean install on one of my computers with XP Pro. If I am happy with XP
Pro, can I buy one additional license for my other computer to install my
copy of XP Pro. Thanks for any help or advice.

Yes, Microsoft does sell additional retail licenses (They cannot
sell additional OEM licenses, obviously.), but at only 15% off their
MSRP. You'd very probably save more money by buying a retail WinXP
Pro Upgrade CD from a discount retail outlet.

By the bye, you'd probably save a lot of time by upgrading your
Win2K to WinXP Pro, rather than performing a clean installation.
Microsoft has greatly improved (over earlier versions of Windows)
WinXP's ability to smoothly upgrade an earlier OS. WinXP is designed
to install and upgrade the existing operating system while
simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and translating
as many personalized settings as possible. The process is designed to
be, and normally is, quite painless. And if the upgrade doesn't
perform up to your expectations, you can always perform the clean
installation later. That said, things can go wrong, in a small number
of cases. If your data is at all important to you, back it up before
proceeding.

You can buy an additional license from MS, but it is only 15% less than the
complete retail package. You probably can buy a Pro Upgrade from one of the
discount computer stores cheaper.

Thank you very much for the info. I have the XP Pro full version and I see
your point about price. Also I think I will try upgrading first to see if
all goes well. It would save a lot of time if it did go right. Again thanks
for a quick answer.
