Hello everyone,
I only want one domain for a client. However, I want to be
able to have users login at their respective site. I plan
on running dcpromo on the member server in the respective
site and choosing the additional domain controller option.
This will be the only domain controller for that
site/location. I was wondering if anyone else has been
running this kind of setup? If so, any problems so far?
Thanks so much. I appreciate any feedback.

Dan,

This is exactly how WIN2000 is supposed to work! It is a
major improvement over WINNT 4.0 and how that worked. I
am glad to hear that you are thinking in this manner.
When I get home I will post a bunch of links that will
help you out.

One of the most important things - when dealing with
Sites - is to make sure that you set up all the Subnets
and then associate each Subnet with the appropriate Site.
Remember, we essentially use Sites to manage Active
Directory Replication. User logons is a second point!

You *MIGHT* want to consider making the sole DC in each
Site a Global Catalog server but we would need a whole
bunch more information before we can determine that.
Also, please bear in mind that redundancy is your friend!
I am sure that your CFO would disagree, though! You might
want to plan for having a second DC in each Site. But,
again, we need more information.

Another thing to consider is that using Terminal Server
might be an option. We have a client that has about 35
users here in Roanoke, VA and has offices in Richmond, VA
and Blacksburg, VA as well as Raleigh, NC. There is a
Terminal Server here in Roanoke to which all the other
users connect. Granted, we are talking about five/six
users in each location. We simply set up a Site-to-Site
VPN ( read: Firewall-to-Firewall VPN ) and we are good to
go. It all depends on your details!

HTH,

Cary

Hello Cary,
Thanks so much for your quick reply and help. I have the
sites and subnets already created. I just have not
promoted the member server(s) to an additional dc(s) yet
in its site. I was considering making each dc a gc. The
second domain controller at each site is a budget issue. I
ran into some issues with DFS, however, I think the issues
can be solved by doing standalone dfs. This is why I was
not sure if additonal dc's instead of their own domain was
the way to go. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the
help. The advice was great.
