adding time of recurring appointments

I need to added up the total time of recurring appointments that meet certain
criteria (read categories). I can export this to excel but it appears that
recurring appointments only appear once in Outlook.

Correct. Recurring appointments are single entries with the recurrences
calculated on the fly. They're not really separate entries.
