Adding Services Entries

I work for a company that develops a third-party app that uses the Services
table to define which port our networked database app uses to communicate.
Previously, I was cheerfully editing this file in notepad to add entries for
our software, and then saving it with no issues. This is apparently not
possible on a Vista system? What is the "best practice" method for adding
services entries on a Vista system?

The file that lives at %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers\Etc\Services - a
plaintext file filled with entries along the lines of
HTTP 80/TCP

Did some judicious poking, and found that
echo servicename port/family >> pathandfilename
seems to work just fine. why it's freaking because i was using notepad
instead is beyond me. whichever, no big deal. just one less thing to like
about vista.

btw, is there any reason other than aero/glass to change from xp?
it seems sluggish, and the interface (which may grow on me) is very
unfriendly, compared to xp (at least so far).

you need to open notepad as admin to edit system files... rightclick, open
as administrator.
vista has huge differences over xp... memory management, graphic/video
processing, security (as you just learned)

use it for a few days and going back to xp feels like an unpolished piece of
shit... imo
