i hope this question is as stupid as i feel asking it but here goes:

i have an active directory 2k3 and it's very nice thank you. i also have a
remote office in NY where I need to put a DC. Must I config the machine and
it it to AD here in the main office and then ship it to NY and add it, or
can I buy a box there and build, config and add it? I have tried building
and adding a box from my home network and having it join and dcpromo but it
was kind of a kloodge. seems like there's gotta be a simpler way, or i may
just be a nutsack. now that i think of it, the latter is probably the case.

thanks for any tips.

You'll probably get a lot of different answers.

My *opinion* is:....I think the most dependable would be to "join" it
locally then ship it. Run a single Domain for the whole Network, but run
each remote location as a separate "AD Site". AD is designed to adjust for
slow links between Sites.

Store-and-Forward Replication
Active Directory Replication Store-and-forward replication is designed to
reduce communication over slow WAN links. An update replicates first to
nearby replicas and from there to replicas that are

thanks for the quick post. i actually made it work but used a combo of VPN
and term services remotely...

Since you are using Windows 2003 you can use the Install From Media option to promote
a Windows 2003 server to a domain controller. Basically you use a recent System State
backup from the domain to use during the dcpromo and then the new domain controller
will replicate changes since that System State backup from the other domain
controller. This is explained in the link below. --- Steve
