I upgraded to 1ghz ram but when i boot my machine is only
reconizes 256mb but in general tab it says 1ghz installed
is there a setting that needs to be changed to get the
boot up to see it

First make sure it's the correct memory type (pc800,
pc2700 etc.) by checking with the Mother-board maker,
some systems will only work with the specified type, just
because it fits doesn't mean it will work, also some
mother-boards will have a set limit of what it can run,
not all systems will take a gig, also some will only
recognize it if the memory size in all the slots are the
same size. If everything seems fine, you may have to go
into the Bios set up configuration for memory and make
sure you've made the change there, a screen should have
appeared on the first boot telling you of a memory size
change and prompted you to go to the set up (bios).

You may need to clarify your question. Gigahertz (1Ghz) represents the CPU
processor speed. 256MB represents the amount of memory you have in
Megabytes (MB). It sounds like you have a 1Ghz CPU with 256MB of memory
installed based on the wording of your post. Is that the case or are you
confused on the terminology?

I assume you mean 1 gb of RAM.

The system information utility in Windows XP has a problem in that it
sometimes reports the wrong amount of RAM when there are multiple
modules installed.

Provided the system properties (Control Panel - System - General)
reports the correct amount there is no problem and the misreporting by
system information is just a cosmetic issue.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck
