Adding Pictures To Borders in FP2003

I thought I posted this already but now can't find it.

I'm trying to add a pciture to a shared border in FP2003. I cannot get the
picture to appear on the actual website. It insists whatever I do, on loading
the image from my hard drive. Either I'm doing something wrong or it's a bug.
Can anyone help?

Cheers, jamie.

Hi David,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't work. I should add that it seems
to do this with most pictures, but if I manually edit the tag to 'hands.jpg'
by removing all the front end file address stuff (As I seem to have to do
generally for any picture I insert, imported or not), it will work only in
the context of a main page but crucially *not* in a border. When I look at
it's properties on the web site itself it shows it as based on my hard drive
and broken.

It must be something else I'm doing... or not!

Thanks, Jamie.

Hi David,

Tried this and it still does not work. If I look at the properties on the
website, it still shows a broken pciture frame and my hard drive as the
address for it. If it helps clarify at all, every picture I insert has to be
manually corrected, wherever I put it on the site. I have to redo the tag and
remove the file location specific stuff, leaving just the relevant filename.
This works fine ultimately doing it with pictures embedded in the main body,
but not for pictures in borders. I even have a copy of the picture in the
_borders folder and the root in case it is looking in either. When it asks to
embed the picture I say yes. It just doesn't seem to...

Cheers, Jamie.

Open the web in FrontPage, then File->Import the image into a folder in
your web. Then drag the image from the folder onto the page.

Thanks for the suggestion also, but this does not work either. It's OK in the
main body of the page (if I change the path in the tag) but not in a border
(no matter what I do). There must be something else.

Also apologies for reposting my earlier response, I got an error message
that said it hadn't been posted, but that was wrong...

Cheers, Jamie.

Sounds like you are working with "loose" pages and not pages that exist
within an FP website.

Opening a page with shared borders as a loose page will display a
warning message where the top border should be. (I tried with FP2003,
and the whole website opened. Opening a copy of the page from the
desktop resulted in the warning.

Yep, but to no avail. One thing I'm not sure about is the reference to loose
pages in earlier messages? Is there anything specific I should look for here?

Again to consider, if it works with main pages, then why not with borders?
It asks me about embedding the pcitures etc and even a manual change of the
tag does nothing. It still hangs on to the path to my hard disk when
published... I am ublishing it using the publish button... It asks to save
beforehand often and I say yes... I've been at this for a couple of weeks now
and juggled most ways to christmas... I figure it's got to be a setting
eslewhere... I just don't know where.

If you can see the content from the shared borders in your page, then it
is unlikely you are editing loose pages. Loose pages are those that are
opened outside a web, or without opening the web first.

Try opening the shared border file itself and dragging the image into
the file.
To see the _borders folder, Tools->Site Options- Advanced tag, check
"Show hidden files and folders" and click OK. Allow the web to refresh.
The shared borders are files named top.htm, left.htm, right.htm, and
bottom.htm (one or more of these may not be present.)

Hi Ron,

Thanks for all these suggestions, but still I'm afraid no change. I was
showing borders etc. already and they appear on wach page in the web. When I
stuck the graphic in the border I just dragged and dropped.

I feel it must be something even more basic and stupid that I'm doing. I
wonder if there is a generic setting anywhere that tells embedded files how
to be addressed, eitherlocally or remotely?

Anyway, thanks so far. Jamie

You;re not Copy/Pasting are you? That will produce the results you are
having.

You can File | Import then place into design from within FP, or you can
Drag/Drop...but not Copy/Paste. FP won't track meta junk with copy/paste.

Hi Rob,

I wish I were, but I'm not. I've tried allvariants and as I say manually
editing the tag also, all to no avail. Boo Hoo!

This is getting quite frustrating, I wonder if there is a global setting
somewhere I need to tweak... or something...

Any help gratfully recieved, J.

Ok, let's back up a bit.
Put the image on a page...any page, and then publish it to the web; does it
show up then?

It usually creates a space for it and then gets the path wrong. I usually
have to edit the tag or properties to direct it to the current directory.
Usually what I do is remove all but the filename.

So no is the short answer, but normally I can fix it manually. Except when
it goes into a border. Do you see my suspicion now? It's like something
inherent is wrong...

Cheers, jamie.

Try this;

Open FP
File | New and One Page Web Site (you'll see the choice over on the right
column)
In the window that opens you'll see One Page Web Site, select that then to
the right under Options choose a location on your hardrive where to save it
and also give it a name...whatever.

This will create just a basic one page website.
Now...
File | Import ... Add File and browse to any image on your harddrive and
Import it into FP...put it into the images folder.
Now on your blank default.htm or index.htm page Drag & Drop that image from
out of the Images folder onto the page.

In Split View or Code View....your image path is correct, correct?

hth..

Rob
