All.

How do you do the lowlevel format, what used to be fdisk on older
systems? I have the disk in, the system can see it but XP can't.

Hard disk manufacturers provide an installation floppy either in a retail
pack or by download from their web sites.

Physically install the HDD, which you have already done, boot from the
floppy and make your installation choices.

It is also possible to perform the format and install booting from the XP
disc but I have only done the above.

Use XP's built in disk manager utility to partition and format the drive.
To get to this, right click on the My Computer icon and select Manage.
This will bring up Computer Management. You will find Disk Management
under the Storage node.

Fdisk and low level format are two very different things.. Fdisk erases and
creates partitions.. low level format does as it suggests.. Fdisk can be
found on a Win98 startup diskette.. low level format utilities can be found
on the HD manufacturer websites.. low level format is not recommended as
part of general installations, more a 'last resort'.. use the XP cd to
partition, format and install..

FDisk is NOT a low-level format -- it is a disk partitioning utility. You
should NOT have to do a low-level format on modern HDs; it is done at the
factory.

Can XP see the physical drive in Disk Manager? If so, it can partition the
drive and then format the logical disks, all from within the Disk Manager
menu.
