Adding notes to emails?

Could anyone tell me if there is a way to add a note to a stored email?

For example, if I got an email from someone asking me to telephone someone
but the telephone line was dead, is there a way that I could write on the
email sent to me or add a note to it saying "not able to contact" or
whatever. The way outlook works on stored emails, it seems that it does not
allow you to alter or add anything to them?

Open the mail and choose Edit-> Edit message and then close and save the
message after you modified it. You can even modify the subject.
