Right click on your "My Computer" Icon.
The amount of RAM installed will be shown

So when i right click on my computer and go to
properties ... it still says i only have 256mb of sdram
so i am taking it as this new memory is not being
recognized because i added another 256 which should be
total 512??? i wish i knew how to tell if it were
working? should the 256 change to 512???

Thanks for your help!!!!

As far as I know that is correct,
As your machine boots you may be able to see a memory count being done, this
should confirm how much RAM you have.

You could download AIDA 32 from
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32

This will tell you what memory you have where, and a lot more info.
