We currently have a DNS entry for a server which resolves
and can be opened from explorer.

If we add a second DNS entry that point to that same
server and IP, we get an error.
"You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on
the network. Go to System in Control Panel to change the
computer name and try again."

We can ping the ip at the command prompt and it does
resolve. But when we try to run the dns name from start,
run, we get that error.

any ideas?

From what you are describing, are you trying to create an alias name for a
file server?

Are you adding a host name record for this server that already exists
as a name of another server?

Jeff
.

With me adding this other host name record, there is now 2
host name record that point to the same IP/Server.

2 names pointing to one IP is okay. Adding a host name that points to
an IP and matches the system name of a different system may not be.
