I have two ram slots in my computer with only one full with 512mb. I
installed another 512mb, same brand and now XP will not start. Says I need
to repair the system using my XP disc. Take the ram out and away it goes
again as good as gold.
Tried both slots and the same thing so they must be ok. Looked in the cmos
but not sure what to change if anything.
Any suggestions please. maybe I should try just the one 1gb ram stick and
not the two 512's.

Hope someone can help

The brand was not as important as the model (type) of RAM stick.
Example, was is a PC4300, or a PC4500, etc.
This has to do with the RAM bus speed.
A given brand can have many types of RAM.

Try running Memtest86+, this runs from a boot disk or CD
and should verify if the momory you purchased works
in your PC.

If Memtest86+ does run and reports no immediate errors,
then let it run for as long as you can, 2,4,6,8 or more hours,
if no errors by then your ram is OK.

If it fails memtest almost immediately then chances are you
purchased the wrong memory for your PC.

Sorry forgot to give those details....they are a matched pair and are PC3200
DDR400 CL=2,5-6-3-3
Hope that helps

Well I'm sorry to say that's what happened so I don't know the answer. The
board must just not like the faster ram or is maybe faulty. Anyway I have it
working.
