Adding more memory to XP puts system to a halt ?

Hi,
I intended to increase my memory by 512 MB. However, when booting XP the
system just freezes when it starts to load.
Is this a limitation in XP that, once it got registered with a particular
set of hardware, it won't allow any "substantial" upgrades,
i.e. more memory, other (read faster) processor, etc ?

No, this is not a limitation of Windows XP. It's far more likely that the
memory you've installed is either faulty or is not the right type for your
system.

Should you change your hardware to such an extent that Windows XP complains
(which involves far more than just a memory upgrade) then all you'll be
asked to do is re-activate it. It won't just stop booting.

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module be compatible
with both the motherboard and any other RAM module(s) in the system.
Additionally, there are sometimes jumper switches on older
motherboards that need to be reset for the new RAM configuration.
Consult your motherboard's manual.
