Adding memory to computer running XP

I had 512 mb ram installed using (2) 256 mb Dimms. I bought 2 more pieces to add, installed them and tried to boot the system. The bios reports 1 Gb. When XP tries to start, it quickly shuts down and the system reboots. Twice it got past the point where I enter my password and quickly got the "blue screen". If I remove either of the new chips in either slot, it boots correctly

At one point with only one chip installed, I got a screen that made me "activate" XP before it would let me in. I have been running this system for 2 years and that is the first time I have seen this. I did not re-install or repair XP

What could be the problem?

The new memory is probably the problem. Try booting with just the new memory
installed. Is the new memory exactly the same as the old? XP doesn't like
mixed memory. Also does your MB support this memory configuration?
