For a long time, I have been adding WAV files at the "Slide Transition" point
in my PowerPoint 2002.
Now, I get the message..."PowerPoint can't play the soundfile XXXX.wav.
Make sure that this is a .wav audio file ...etc."
I am sure it is a .wav file.
In the Options/General, I have it set to link files over 50 MB.
I must have accidentally changed something.
Help!

I haven't seen this message, but to troubleshoot you might try to see if you
can play a sound in Word. (The steps are different: Insert>Object, click
Create from File tab. Click Browse and locate the file. Double-click it to
play it.)

Also, have you tried with a different WAV file?
Finally, can you play WAV files in Windows? Go to Control Panel > Sounds and
Audio Devices and click the Sounds tab. There you can play various Windows
sounds. On the Audio tab, in the Sound playback section, you can check the
Windows setting for all sound playback.
